What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy that comes from resources that are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in three distinct areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling and rural (off-grid) energy services.

The most common “Onsite Generation” renewable sources are solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy. In some geographic locations, it may be beneficial to use a system that combines both sources.

  • Things to consider before selecting a system include: Consultation with an energy efficiency professional who is trained in onsite generation to evaluate your property so that you reap the most benefit from your system.
  • Lowering the amount of energy your home uses – more consumption means larger, more expensive systems.
  • Optimal design of an onsite generation system to purchase only what you need to meet your energy profile (in Texas, utilities are not required to purchase any generation your system produces above your consumption, so once you produce the amount you consume, you are feeding the grid for free).
  • Verification of local codes.
  • Allowance by the Home Owner Association (HOA) where you reside for the installation of onsite generation.
  • Verification of local codes.
