Energy Efficient Construction

Efficient energy use, sometimes called energy efficiency, is the goal of reducing the amount of energy required to provide products and/or services.

In new home construction, energy efficiency can often be gained by utilizing a more efficient technology or building process rather than by asking the new homeowner to change his or her behavior. For example, super insulating a home allows a structure to use less heating and cooling energy to achieve and maintain a comfortable temperature. Installing high efficiency lighting (LED) or using natural light can all reduce the amount of energy required to attain the same level of illumination compared with using traditional incandescent light bulbs. LEDs one-sixth the energy of incandescent lights and may last from six to ten times longer.

Some of the motivations behind energy efficiency include:

  • Reduced energy costs, especially if the energy savings offset any additional costs of implementing an energy-efficient technology.
  • Reduced emissions.
